Tombstone unveiling and celebration of life
1945–2023 · 1947–2021
With love and gratitude, the Kobe family invites you to honour two lives of service, the family they built and the legacy they left behind.
Their lives were a blessing. Their love was our foundation. Their memory will remain with us forever.
Two lives, one enduring legacy
On 30 June 1971, at Phokeng in Rustenburg, Mashilo Reuben Kobe and Nnanabo Rose Kobe made a solemn commitment to love and remain with one another until parted by death.
They remained true to that commitment for almost fifty years, until Rose passed away on 23 January 2021. Together, they built a home founded on love, faith, education, service and commitment to family. Mashilo served through education and Rose through nursing and healthcare.
Although death separated them from one another and from us, the life they shared remains part of our family’s story. Their values continue to shape who we are, and their love continues to hold us together.

The family they built
Mashilo and Rose were blessed with four children and eight grandchildren. Their family remains the greatest expression of the love, commitment and sacrifices that defined their life together.
Their firstborn son, who passed away on 5 August 2005.
Married to Ramokone Rachel Kobe.
Married to Refilwe Nkati Kobe.
A beloved daughter and part of their continuing legacy.

Remembering their lives
One taught and guided minds. The other cared for and comforted people.

Our beloved father · Affectionately known as Papa Oupa or Bra Ru
6 July 1945 – 17 October 2023
Mashilo Reuben Kobe was born at Kraanspoort Mission in the Louis Trichardt district, now known as Makhado. He was the fifth-born of six children born to the late Ngwako Reuben Jack Kobe and Mokgadi Evelyn Kobe.
He attended Stefanus Hoff Myer Primary School, Ratau Primary School, Emarentia Geldenhys School and Hwiti High School, completing his matric through correspondence. He obtained his Higher Primary Teachers Certificate at Bethesda Normal College, later graduated through UNISA and obtained a Management Diploma from Rand Afrikaans University.
Before becoming a teacher, Mashilo worked as a clerk at H.C. Boshoff Sending Hospital. It was there that he met Rose, whom he later married. His education career took him from teacher and Head of Department to principal, examiner, English specialist and mentor.
Even after retiring from public service in 2000, he continued teaching, facilitating and leading schools. At Happy Day Private School, he helped secure Umalusi registration and improved the Grade 12 pass rate from 27% to 79% in 2010.
He is remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, educator and community leader whose life was built around service, learning and responsibility.

Our beloved mother · Affectionately known as Koko Mama
2 April 1947 – 23 January 2021
Nnanabo Rose Kobe was born at Tshwara Village in Phokeng, Rustenburg. She was the fourth-born child of the late Rantikwane David Senne and Ntobo Suzan Senne. She was baptised and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Sarona.
Rose began her primary education at Moremogolo Primary School and completed her secondary education at Bafokeng School. She then trained as a nurse at Groot Marico Hospital and Groothoek Hospital.
She devoted her working life to nursing and healthcare, continuing to serve patients and families until her retirement from Mediclinic in 2019. She cared for people not only through her profession, but also through the kindness, warmth and devotion she showed at home.
Through her marriage, she became a devoted member of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa. She is remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, for her commitment to healthcare, and for the quiet strength with which she served others.
In his own words
In 2012, Mashilo sent his son Maemo a biography that he wanted to be read at his funeral. When the time came, Maemo honoured that request. His own words preserve his identity, ancestry, faith and message to his children.
“Ya ka tema ke e kgathile, e shaletse lena bana baka.”
I have played my part. What remains is now in your hands, my children.
I was born on the 6th day of July 1945 at a mission called Kraanspoort in the Louis Trichardt district and my parents named me Mashilo Reuben Kobe. My late parents, Ngwako Reuben Jack and Mokgadi Evelyn Kobe were blessed with six children namely Kobe, who passed on, Manyekana Johannes, Sello Elisabeth, Mokgadi, who passed on, Mashilo Reuben and Matome Jacob.
I attended Stefanus Hoff Myer Primary School from Substandard A to Standard 1 from 1955 to 1956, and Ratau Primary School from Standard 2 to Standard 6 from 1957 to 1961. My secondary education was at Emarentia Geldenhys School from Form 1 to Form 3 from 1962 to 1964, and Hwiti High School for Form 4 in 1965. I completed my matric through correspondence.
My tertiary education was completed at Bethesda Normal College, where I did my Higher Primary Teachers Certificate from 1967 to 1968. I graduated with UNISA through correspondence and later acquired a Management Diploma at RAU.
I worked at H.C. Boshoff Sending Hospital as a clerk from November 1968 to January 1970, where I was mentored by the late Dr H.C. Boshoff and equipped with skills such as typing, answering phones at the switchboard, filing and working with TB patients. It was there where I met my Rose, whom I later wedded and who became the mother of my children.
In February 1970 I started teaching at Motheong Primary School. I worked there for twelve years. During those years I was elected Secretary of the Town Council of Moganyaka Township, Leeuwfontein.
In 1983 I went to work at V.P. Manthata Senior Secondary School as a senior teacher and Head of Department. In 1992 I was promoted to principal at G.H. France Secondary School. I worked there for one year, as my services were required back at V.P. Manthata as principal.
During my teaching career I was an English examiner for English Paper Two, literature. I started as a sub-examiner, later became a senior sub-examiner and then Chief Examiner, for a total of thirty years. I retired from public service at the end of 2000 at the age of 55.
After retirement I rested for only one year. In 2002 Meridian College knocked at my door requiring my services as an English master. I served them for four years, teaching English Home Language and English First Additional Language and producing 99% and 100% pass rates respectively.
In 2008 I worked as an English facilitator for ELET, supervising and helping teachers to teach English effectively. I also worked for the Transnet Foundation as an English facilitator, and taught English to Grades 11 and 12 at the former Sekhukhune College of Education.
In 2009 I became principal of Happy Day Private School for two years. I helped the school with its Umalusi registration when it was facing deregistration because of poor management. I also improved its Grade 12 results from a pass rate of 27% to 79% in 2010.

Their legacy of service
One taught and guided minds. The other cared for and comforted people.
Their greatest legacy is not found only in the positions they held or the institutions they served. It is found in their children, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, former learners, patients, colleagues and all those whose lives were touched by their work and kindness.
As we unveil their tombstones, we do more than mark their final resting places. We acknowledge lives that mattered, sacrifices that shaped us and a love that continues beyond death.

Plan your journey
Use the family’s shared location to plan your route and travel time.
Open location in Google MapsThe unveiling falls on a long weekend, when higher traffic volumes are expected on routes into Polokwane. Please allow extra time for your journey.
A church gathering will also be taking place at Moria during the same weekend. This may add to congestion on roads leading towards Polokwane and the surrounding areas.
Guests travelling on Friday are encouraged to leave earlier than usual to avoid the busiest afternoon traffic and arrive with enough time to settle in.
Please check traffic conditions before departure and plan your route accordingly.
A life in photographs
These photographs celebrate their marriage, family life, years of service and the joyful occasions they shared with those they loved.
A message from the family
Your presence is not only an expression of support for our family. It is also an acknowledgement of the lives our parents lived and the relationships they formed during their time with us.
Although Mashilo and Rose are no longer physically present, their teachings, values, love and memories remain deeply rooted in our family. We invite you to remember them, honour their contribution and celebrate the legacy they entrusted to us.
